The 143rd winner of the St Leger, (although now called the September Stakes due to it being moved from Doncaster because of the First World War), held on Wednesday 11th September 1918 over the 1 mile 6 furlongs of the Cesarewitch course at Newmarket, was Gainsborough, a bay colt by Bayardo out of Rosedrop, owned by Lady James Douglas. A field of 5 runners contested the race which was worth £1,250. (Equivalent to £79,500 in 2017)
